発言のきっかけをつくる

★I’m curious to know ～
～についてとても知りたいのだが

プレゼンを聞いたあとで何か質問する時、自分が興味を抱いた点を提示する表現です。
「I’m interested in～」より強い感情が込められています。
例文
I’m curious to know what the specifications of the new microprocessor are.

★I’m curious as to why ～
なぜ～なのかについてとても興味があるのだが

例文
I understand the logic behind the decisions to reorganize，but I’m curious as to why they decided to do it now.

★I’m curious about ～
～についてとても好奇心があるのだが

例文
I’m curious about the high-speed internet access options in your city.

★it seems to me that ～
私には～のように思えるのだが

あなたが言っていることは私にはこう思えてしまうが、実際どうなのか？と切り出して質問する時の表現です。
"me"の発音を強調します。
例文
It seems to me that all he did was decrease the company’s scale，which obviously results in reduced costs.

★I’m not comfortable with ～
～に関して、気になるのですが

相手の説明に対して、一部同意できない部分がある時に使う表現です。
例文
I agree on the overall content of our presentation. However，I’m not comfortable with the suggestion that everyone in the group must prepare his or her own speech.

★Let me confirm that ～
ちょっと～であることを確認させてください

相手の真意がつかめなかった時、自分の言葉に言い換えて聞き直すのに使う表現です。
例文
Let me confirm that what you mean is that there are no objectives，and therefore the meeting will just be a casual discussion without a goal.

★Let me confirm whether ～
ちょっと～なのかどうかを確認させてください

例文
Let me confirm whether or not you agree with my concept.

★It’s meaningless.
それは無意味だ

同じ意味で”It’s worthless”もよく使われます。
例文
Don’t use that data in your report. It’s meaningless.

★I was thinking the same thing.
ちょうど今それを考えていたよ

自分が考えていたことと同じことを誰かが発言した時に使う表現です。
例文
In fact，I was thinking the same thing when I read about the start-up.

★Does that make sense?
これの意味わかるかい？

相手がこちらの意図をあまり理解していないと感じた時に、念を押して確認する表現です。
例文
So that is what I am thinking we should do. Does that make sense?

★What’s the matter with ～?
～の何が問題なの？

「何かまずい点でもあるの？」というニュアンスです。
“What’s wrong with ～?”も同じ意味で使われます。
例文
Please explain to me. What’s the matter with the accounting report?

★Let me finish my comments.
私の話を最後まで言わせてよ

「ちょっと待て、最後まで聞け」というニュアンスの表現です。自分の意見が言い終わる前に割り込んでくる反論に対して応戦するときに使います。
例文
Please let me finish my comments before asking questions.

★as＜人＞told earlier，
先ほど＜人＞が話しに出した通り

前の発言者がかなり説明を加えた内容に対して、あとから何か付け足す場合の表現です。
例文
As Mr. Lee told earlier，expansion into foreign market is the basic business strategy of our company.

★as＜人＞mentioned earlier，
先ほど＜人＞が話しに出したように

前の発言者が軽くふれた内容に対して、あとから何か付け足す場合の表現です。
例文
As Mr. Kim mentioned earlier，specializing in financial management is a very important idea.

★Let me think about it.
ちょっと考えさせてよ

「即答できないので、しばらく考える時間をください」というニュアンスの表現です。
例文
Before I make a commitment，let me think about it one more day.

★I hate to say this, but
こんなこと言いたくはないけど、

言いにくいことを切り出す場合に使います。
例文
I hate to say this, but you need to work over the weekend to complete the report.

★Does ～ have something to do with…?
～が何か…に関係があるのですか？

相手が無関係な話題を出してきたとき、元の話題との関連性をきく表現です。
強調したいときは” anything”を使います。
例文
Your comment is interesting, but does it have anything to do with our current discussion?

★～ is surprising. Even more surprisingly,…
～には驚く。さらに驚いたことには、…

似た音の形容詞と副詞を、文末と次の文頭に続けることにより韻の効果を狙った表現です。
例文
The chairman’s retirement was surprising. Even more surprisingly, his son was named the new chairman.

★～ is important. Even more importantly,…
～は重要だ。さらに重要なことには、…

例文
Studying English is important. Even more importantly, it's a way to discipline my intellect.

この議論の本質は～

自分の意見に対して、本質と無関係の部分に関する反対があったときに使える表現です。
例文
The real problem here is not who is right and who is wrong, but how to correct the mistakes and finish the project on schedule.

★you may disagree, but I think ～
あなたは反対するかもしれないが、私は～のように思う

いろいろな立場があり、相手が無条件に賛成するとは思えない状況で自分の考えを言う場合に使います
例文
You may disagree, but I think that it is important to enjoy both one’s work and one’s social life.

★To some degree, it is ～. But as far as … is concerned, ～
ある程度、それは～である。しかし、…に関する限りにおいては～

ある程度はそのことを認めながら、反論するときび使う表現です。
例文
To some degree, the R&D team is going over budget. But as far as I am concerned, they are investing in the future, and I support them.

★in＜人＞’s words, ～
＜人＞の言葉を借りれば～

自分の意見と他人の意見を合わせようとするときに使う表現です。
例文
In my professor’s words, this kind of expense is a “sunk cost”.

★my interpretation is that ～
私の解釈では～

自分がどのような解釈に基づいて発言しているかを主張する表現です
例文
The other day, the president of our company said that we need to save money. My interpretation of her statement is that we should spend money more effectively, not spend a lot less money.

★to the best of my knowledge, ～
私の知る限りでは～

議論に参加している人の中に、自分より経験がある人や専門家がいるときに、自分を謙遜する言い方です。
例文
I don’t know all the details, but to the best of my knowledge, we are the current market leader in international wireless telecommunications.

★as far as I know, ～
私の知る限りでは～

例文
As far as I know, the next international meeting of the video-on-demand industry is still scheduled for June.

曖昧に答える

★It depends.
時と場合によります

★Depends on what?
何によるのですか？

理由を質問されたとき、曖昧に答える表現と、その切り返しの表現です。

★I don’t care.
私は気にしないけど

「私はかまいません」というニュアンスで使われます。
例文
I don’t care about the outcome of the game.

★Who cares?
誰が気にしますか？

「誰も気にしないよ」というニュアンスで使われます。
例文
Who cares what you think?

★it varies from △ to △
それは△によっていろいろ変わる

△には”person”や”place”などが入ります。
例文
The initial assumption in not exact; it varies from person to person.

★it varies from up △ to down ○
それは△増から○減まで変化する

△や○には数字が入ります。
例文
It varies from up 30% to down 10%.

★it doesn’t matter
それは大した問題じゃない

この場合の”matter”は「重要である」という意味の動詞です。
例文
In some cases I have a strong opinion about the best strategy. In this case, however, it doesn’t matter, because either one will be effective.

～は上位…の一つに位置づけられている

“as one of”の代わりに”among”を使うこともできます

疑問詞 + ever の関係代名詞シリーズです。

We have similar tastes. I seem to like whatever you like.

誰でもそこにいる人

Since I’m not sure who is in charge of the meeting, we will just ask whoever is there to help us.

★whenever＜人/もの＞is available,
いつでも空いている時間

例文
A descriptor will cause a signal to be sent whenever data is available to be read from it.

～という事実は持ち出すまでもなく十分である、という場合の表現です。

さらに

例文
Besides leading the industry in patents, we are also number one in publishing. In addition, we have the greatest number of Ph.D.’s on staff.

いくつかの例をあげる場合に使われる表現です。

I can cite several reasons why the company must restructure the sales unit. For one thing, there is too much overhead in that unit. For another, sales per person is 50% less than last year.

何か問題提起がされているとき、別の観点から自分の意見を追加するときの表現です。

～に別のことを指摘する

例文
I would like to point out another thing relevant to the current discussion.

まず明らかに、～。さらに、…

明らかな理由と、その裏の理由の2つを説明する場合に使われます。
例文
Obviously, our high profits during this period are due in large part to the huge increase in sales volume. Moreover, the higher profits are a result of increased retail prices and cost of operations.

試験、討論、規定など、色々な範囲を表すことができます。

～というよりは、むしろ

相手の指摘した論点が正確さを欠いているような場合に使える表現です。
例文
Rather than argue about what is wrong, why don’t you try to figure out what is right?

★miss the point
論点をつかんでいない

例文
You are missing the point of my proposal. Let me explain it again.

★～is outside the window
それは範囲外だ

“the window”を使って範囲を表現します。
例文
That is outside the window of today’s discussion.

★～is inside the window
それは範囲内だ

例文
That topic is inside the window of today’s meeting.

★far from it
とんでもない

「そこからとても遠い」→「まったく正反対だ」という意味の表現です。
例文
You asked me if I agreed with the concept. Far from it, I completely disagree.

★～is out of the question
問題外だ、とても無理だ

必ず定冠詞の”the”をつけて使います。
例文
We have a strict deadline, so your request for a one week delay is out of the question.

★narrow one's scope
視野を狭める

○○がカバーする範囲を狭めると言うときなどに使う表現です。
例文
When you focus on an issue, you need to narrow your scope and ignore irrelevant information.

★broaden one's scope
視野を広げる

○○がカバーする範囲を広げると言うときなどに使う表現です。
例文
Education helps to broaden a person's scope of communication.

～に賛成して

「～に対して賛成の立場にある」という意味です。

～を支持して

あなたの意見に大賛成だ

これ以上強くは賛成できないほど賛成するという意味です。
